Part 5: Spiritual Weight Loss

“We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience.” Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

During Meditation this morning I hit on the perfect way to explain what I mean by this idea of Spiritual Weight Loss. Afterward I walked the dog, got dressed for work and forgot the sheer genius of my insight.

The Presbyterian Church of Dover, Delaware. It was here, surrounded by people who loved me that I learned about Spirit, but awareness started with my parents Walt and Gloria Fili.

Years ago I approached my clients with the idea of meditation and called it Still and Alert Attention. Because people think meditation means you have to turn into some skinny guy with a beard, and loin cloth few attended my classes. So, many have thrown the baby out with the bath water and have never come for one of my classes. I hope they’re pursuing the Silence on their own because life isn’t complete without it. In that Silence is your connection to your spirit and your understanding of God or Spirit. I choose to call this force Spirit because it feels comfortable for me. You substitute the name you feel best identifies your Higher Power.

Why is Spirit important for our well-being let alone our health? How can Spirit be on a web site where the author is a personal trainer and fitness coach? It isn’t just about tight butts and flat abs. We are a package deal. Body — Mind — Spirit. Our life gets better when they work together. Vision allows us to see how our body looks. Thoughts fill us with ideas and we know our mind is at work. Do we really understand our Spirit? Do we understand how important the connection is to the Spiritual side of ourselves? Six weeks ago I asked you to consider implementing a time of sitting in Silence as you wake each day. Giving Thanks. Ask for Guidance, and know you will have all you need. How’s that working for you?

If you have ever prayed for help with your weight, or for a flat belly you have forgotten something very important. The body you seek is already within you, and the power to do what you need to do is there too. Spirit (God) is part of you from the moment you’re born. It’s pure love with all the knowledge of the Universe at your disposal.

Here’s where it gets completely beautiful. You don’t have to do anything to get Spirit to work for you except, “Be Still and Know that I AM…” Using Silence to align yourself with Spirit will allow the healing, life altering power to work in you. You might wonder how that happens. Suffice it to say it isn’t like an engine with moving parts. It is the “still, small voice” that orders and orchestrates your life to come in line with Spirit.

Over the last several years there has been a big push toward applying the Law of Attraction to draw things to you. In my opinion it doesn’t work. Cutting out pictures of your dream body does not guarantee you will build that body unless you work it from the level of the soul. That’s the missing link in the Law of Attraction. Trust that “all things are possible” and your life will unfold with grace and love. This is the key to manifesting weight loss through the Spirit.

Silence and Gratitude. Regularly spend time in silence or meditation, and be grateful for everything in your life. I know it sounds trite, but it works.

Be Well!
